Longton 34 Vs 21 Stafford
So we’ve played Friday Evening, Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon and now a Saturday morning up at Longton.
The home team played with the wind and slope to start and scored when Staffords defence was at 6s and 7s and no fullback, it was a slow start, some I think may have still been in bed, however the visitors would soon wake up (5-0).
As the defence got set and cleaned up the kickoff , the ball would eventually get turned over but as Longton went wide, Jolame read the pass and he would take the intercept from his 22 into the Longton half and continued all the way to give Stafford the lead .(5-7 Ellis conv).
Stafford despite the elements were facing up well and trying to move the ball, as Longton resorted to kicking, one such kick looked to be fielded by Finn, only for the ball to bounce as rugby balls can, in this case away from the fullback and into the hands of the on rushing winger for a Longton gift. (12-7).
Staffords defence was firing with Jonah and Danial putting in a shift already, however penalties were punishing their hard work. Eventually Longton would take the 3pts to extend the lead (15-7).
From the Stafford restart, Jude took the ball clean, Finn and Oli continued the carries and Stafford then kicked a penalty to touch to provide a good position, only for the pack to be unable to take advantage.
The script for the rest of the half was Stafford would gain some Territory but a penalty or turnover meant the hard work would be undone as long clearing kicks kept Stafford at bay. Despite good defence from Tyler and Freddie, Longton would score two further tries, to go in (29-7).
The second half meant Stafford now had the elements and it would have been interesting had they managed to get an early try, but despite the pressure, unusual poor handling would let the Colts down.
The pressure would continue as Stafford took one against the head and eventually following a yellow card to the home team, the moment came for hands left and Jude would score. (29-14 Ellis conv)
Stafford looked to keep pushing and build the pressure, from a short restart, Stafford were presented with a scrum on halfway, with things creaking, Danail popped the ball blind and Finn coming deep from fullback stepped and weaved his way from halfway to try line, for a try to narrow the lead to 8. (29-21 Ellis conv)
The chance was there to really test the home side but our hands would let us down and the loose ball woud be turned into a try for the home team against the run of play (34-21).
Despite that, the Colts would continue to look for scores and camped in the Longton half for the rest of the game, they couldn’t convert this into anymore points and the game would drift away.
Although the points would suggest that Longton were comfortable winners, I don’t think this reflected the game, Stafford defended really well, Jonah, Jake, Tyler and Freddie all putting hits in, they kept their heads as it became niggly, Logan managed to keep a lid on it when he could have easily gone over the top. They all competed really hard at the breakdown and ran hard with ball in hand. Maybe, there was some naivety in their play at times but they can take a lot of credit from this performance.
