Having lost the 2 previous Games Stafford Colts were hosting Tamworth for a friendly fixture hoping to return to winning ways.
Contrary to last Sunday's game at Dudley Kingswinford the team started the match very sharply putting their guests straight away under pressure and were forcing them to play in their own half for the first minutes of the game. It took 15 minutes for Dan Poultney to slalom through Tamworth's defense and open the score, with Seb Conaghan breaking away from his recent tradition of hitting the post and converting to make it 7 nil for the home team. 8 minutes later Charlie Kirby scored the second try of the day launching himself from the back of a scrum in Tamworth's 22, thus rewarding Stafford's forwards from their hard work with Seb narrowly missing his second kick of the day.
Stafford's Backs were also keen to get some of the action and despite a very slippery ball they granted us with a very nice move started by Full back Aiden Barker and continued by a very solid run on the left wing by Henry Perks. An action that would have certainly finished by a try if the referee had not been forced to stop the game because of a suspected concussion to one of the Tamworth's player. Reward for our backs was not to be too long to come with a solo effort by Finn Osmant scoring almost under the posts, following a turnover ball in a ruck won by Stafford's pack. Seb's conversion making it 19-0 at Half time.
The second half was pretty much a similar story with Stafford forcing Tamworth to stay in their half most of the time. A superb cross over kick by Henry Perks just outside Tamworth's 22 was caught by Ed Matthews on his wing but sadly this superb action was not concluded by a try the ball not being released following a tackle, Tamworth being able to get out of their 22 with that penalty. Despite several substitutions being made to Stafford's team Tamworth were still incapable to score in their rare visits inside the Home team's 22. This was not the case for Stafford, having decided to kick to touch following a penalty, the ball was neatly caught at the lineout and Harry Woolman scored from the back of the rolling maul that ensued. This action taking the score to 24 , Seb Conaghan having missed the very difficult conversion from the far left of the pitch. The scoreline of the day was to be completed by another score by Harry Woolman 20 mn later, this one following a series of pick and go's by the forwards under Tamworth's posts. Seb completing his 3rd conversion of the day and taking the final score to 31-0.
A very pleasant and entertaining game to watch and a very serious performance from the boys
