Stafford Colts welcomed Leek Colts to the County Ground for the first fixture in the Staffordshire Colts Cup.
Stafford started the fixture strongly putting the opposition under long periods of pressure deep in their own half. The home team pressure eventually paid off with Harry Brogan nearly crossing the line but infringements by the visiting defence unable to prevent the penalty try. This spurred Leek into action and they responded with a well worked unconverted try of their own to cut the deficit. Stafford picked up the tempo with a good period of interplay ending with Ben Taylor smashing through for a try, converted by James Moran. Leek struck back again with a second unconverted try to haul the scores to within four points. The remainder of the period saw Stafford camped in the visitor’s half but a dogged defence from Leek absorbing everything thrown at it. Stafford went into half time leading 14-10 but the game very much on a knife edge.
Stafford resumed the assault at the beginning of the second half eventually breaching the strong defence through a Ben Gardner try, converted by James Moran. The home side started to control the game but Leek wouldn’t lie down and continued to show great spirit in defence frustrating the attack for long periods. Stafford saved the best until last with Alfie Spencer picking a great line to sprint the length of the pitch for a try underneath the posts, converted by Charlie Woolman.
