Stafford Colts travelled away for a friendly fixture against Silhillians on Sunday determined to maintain their unbeaten run in the build up to next Sundays Staffs Cup Semi Final against Wolverhampton Colts.
Silhillians put Stafford under pressure from the kick off making them defend from deep within their own half and it was some great defence from Stafford that created the first try against the run of play. Stafford’s line speed putting Silhillians attack under pressure created a drop ball which Stafford pounced on and attacked from their own half putting Tom Godwin clear for an unconverted try. Silhillians were not deterred by this and soon hit back with an unconverted try of their own. With 10 minutes of the first half remaining Stafford managed to mount some good attacks into the Silhillians half however the home side speed to the breakdown and aggression in the rucks was causing the visitors problems and slowing down their attack allowing the defence to organise themselves.
After a half time team talk the Stafford Colts began to dominate in the loose meeting aggression with aggression, producing much faster ball for their backs. It was a backline move from a scrum that saw full back Mitch Averis hit the line a speed and cut through the defence to score Stafford’s 2nd unconverted try and take back the lead. Stafford’s back row of Larkin, Godwin and Morrison began to cause Silhillians problem in loose play making them make basic handling errors which the Stafford team used to their advantage making Silhillians play from deep within their own half. With the penalty count against them mounting it wasn’t long before Stafford were awarded a kickable penalty taken by Dean Ainger to extend the scoreline. With 5 minutes remaining and Silhillians unable to get out of their own half a Stafford Ruck 5 meters out saw Dan Morrison pick and drive over for the last try of the match. Final Score 5-18 to Stafford Colts.
