Telford 7 – 34 Stafford
With a free weekend Stafford Colts used the opportunity, travelling to Telford for a friendly fixture in which they could try out players in new positions.
From the kick off Stafford Colts showed their intention of playing a fast open game using their light fast pack to tie the Telford defence into the rucks before releasing the backs. However the home side defence held out and it was a full 20 minutes before Stafford got any points on the board with some ferocious rucking producing fast ball to put Josh Arnold clear for an unconverted try in the corner. Stafford kept up the momentum and their pack began to dominate in the set pieces as well as the loose. The visiting back row also rose to the occasion reaching every breakdown first and turning over clean ball. This created the platform which allowed Billy Adamson to crash over just before half time for his first try of the season. Stafford went into half time leading by 0 -10.
The second half started with Stafford forcing the Telford team to play everything from their own half and with the home side pack going backwards the possession they did get was slow and scrappy. With good lineout ball Stafford put the ball through the backs hands and good handling released wing
John Carr who with 2 defenders to beat show great pace around the outside to
score near the posts converted by Callum Heath. Stafford began to really punish the tiring Telford team moving them around the pitch at speed and it was Harry Lycet who broke from a ruck to score the next try. Showing real skill the Stafford Colts team stuck to their game plan working through phases before running the ball at a ragged defence. Dan Morrison breaking from just outside the Telford 22 brushed aside several tackles before being caught just short of the line. However a great offload to fellow back row Tom Godwin produced a fantastic forwards try, converted by Callum Heath. Telford then had their best period of play and a converted try put them on the scoreboard. This lapse seem to sting the Stafford team into life once more and the backlash saw some ferocious forward rucking and it was from one such ruck that scrum half Aaron Dewfall-Carver darted over for an unconverted try to round of a man of the match performance.
This great display of rugby maintains the Colts momentum ahead of their next
league clash away against Whitchurch on 7th December.
