Stafford 18 – 17 Leek
Stafford development team welcomed Leek to the county ground for the return league fixture of the season.
The development team started slowly with Leek playing the faster rugby. The visitors took advantage of the home sides sluggish start to run in a very early try and take the lead. This woke Stafford up and they started to work their way into the match gaining possession and territory. As the momentum built, Leek couldn’t contain the Stafford attack and the sustained pressure was rewarded as Matthew Chalmers powered over the line for the try, Callum Heath slotting the conversion to tie the scores. Stafford went into half time drawing 7 – 7, but having had the better finish to the half.
Leek started the second half with renewed purpose and scored another early try to snatch back the lead. Stafford settled into some good periods of rugby and a Callum Heath penalty narrowed the deficit. The match then got slightly scrappy as both sides fought for the advantage, yellow cards were shown and the teams had to cope with temporarily loosing players. The play continued to be very even between the teams until some inspired play saw Matthew Chalmers break the Leek defence and Will Richards just being held up short of the line. Quick ball from Stafford saw Simon Thomas muscle his way across the line for the lead. A Leek penalty wrestled the lead back into the hands of the moorlands side with 5 minutes remaining on the clock. Stafford pushed hard for the try but got their reward through a penalty in front of the posts. A cool headed Callum Heath stepped up and slotted the ball between the posts for the win.
