Thirteen man Stafford fight hard for the victory at Wigginton Lodge.

Tamworth 17 – 24 Stafford

Stafford travelled to the east of the county with an understrength squad, but determined to give a good account of themselves against a strong Tamworth team. The home side also found themselves short of bodies and so the lack of numbers evened out between the teams.

Stafford started the game with a period of early pressure that quickly earned a penalty, the first points of the game coming through the boot of Josh Arnold. Then the travelling Stafford side lost Director of Rugby, Dermot Hogan, to injury which reduced them to a side of thirteen. Tamworth took full advantage of their numbers and responded with some good attacking play in the Stafford half. The visitors defended strongly and the experienced hands of Dave Wareham ripped the ball from Tamworth for a long run in and try, converted by Josh Arnold. Tamworth ramped up the attack and on the stroke of half time, the large pack mauled over the line to score. Stafford went into half time leading by 5 – 10, but having to work hard to cover the depleted numbers.

The second half saw Tamworth assaulting a snarling Stafford defence and it took them until the start of the final quarter to break down the visitors and even the scores. Stafford replied almost immediately when a quick penalty released Josh Arnold to break through and score and converted try, retaking the lead. With 10 mins left on the clock a great kick by Matty Walklate drove the ball deep down into the Tamworth 22. The kick was excellently chased down by Will Salt but he was intercepted by a Tamworth player, but a supporting Ben Pryce was on hand to take the ball and score under the posts, Josh Arnold adding the conversion. With a minute left on the clock, Tamworth scored a converted try to bring them back within striking distance, but time was against them and it wasn’t enough to threaten a great Stafford performance led by Matty Walklate.
