Stafford 39 – 5 Tamworth
Stafford development team welcomed Tamworth to the county ground for a friendly fixture as both sides took a break from a league action.
Tamworth started at a furious pace and made all of the early running. Stafford absorbed everything the visitors threw at them and then launched a ferocious counter attack which carved though the opposition. Mitch Averis accelerating past several defenders to take the first try, Cal Heath slotting the conversion. As the home side built the pressure the visitors couldn’t find a response and reluctantly conceded a penalty which allowed Cal Heath to increase the lead. Stafford started to showcase all of their talents, creating space all over the pitch and when a charging Dave Austin delicately sidestepped through the defence there was no stopping the second try, Cal Heath maintaining his 100% record. The assault was relentless forcing the visitors to work hard, but they couldn’t plug all of the gaps and as the attack created the space, Matthew Chalmers flew through to take the third try. Stafford went into the break leading 22 – 0 and having dominated most of the game.
Tamworth came into the second half determined to salvage something from the match and they started to find some success with their scrum. A Cal Heath penalty dented the optimism, but Tamworth had a good period of play which saw them come close with a penalty of their own. Stafford still maintained the edge and probing attacks saw converted tries for Matthew Chalmers and Vinny Hogan killing off any chance of resurgence from the visitors. To their credit Tamworth didn’t stop competing and a late try was a fair reward for the effort they had expended.
