Seconds, Tamed by the Wolves

Last Saturday saw Stafford entertain a Wolverhampton 2nd s whom occupy top spot of the merit table and had also given the home a heavy defeat early on in the season.
The Stafford side had again made changes but this was not to defect away from the progress that the team as a whole has made over the last 3 months putting in some stunning performances and a great winning run, which has seen them rise up through the table in to 3rd spot. This fixture was all set to be a tough test from the start.
From the kick off, Stafford felt the pressure, the large Wolverhampton pack made it difficult to force any real opening early on. It was clear that the power and strength that they posed was to haunt the home side. Wolves took the lead after creating an opening off the scrum and while Stafford made all attempts to claw back some points they seemed not to manage to break through the defence. Finally, just before half time fly half matt walk lake crossed over to get some points on the board and up stepped Tim Woolman to slot it between the sticks.

The second half started brightly, it was Stafford who showed the determination to attack with the ball in hand and kept much more procession, yet it seemed to be the final piece of the puzzle never would fit into place. Wolverhampton had a different story, sticking to what they did best keeping the ball close to hand, they seemed to be able to create a hole in the defence and add to the score line again and again.
Yet with the club house in view and only with less than 5 minutes left on the clock Stafford were not done. The final push in which every player stepped up their game. Robbie Watts went close in the corner only to be denied by inches then after several passages of play, quick recycling and offloading the ball came out to Walklate who had to beat 3men and drive for the corner as the ref called the game to an end.
