Marvels & Stags put in a hard but rewarding shift of rugby against one of the oldest mixed ability teams in the country.

The Marvels & Stags travelled for their first away game of the season for a match against Worcester. The Worcester team are one of the oldest MAR teams and as such are always difficult opposition, having had years to perfect their game. The Marvels & Stags travelled slightly light on numbers and despite the best efforts of the M6, still managed to arrive for an exciting afternoon of rugby.

In the spirit of MAR, Worcester provided a number of players to even up the sides. The team looked resplendent in the yellow kit of the Stags, blending with the blue of the home side for a colourful display on the field. The game was played in 20-minute periods to give all players sufficient rest time during the encounter. Keith Richards opened proceedings and was soon leading the way for the team with some pin point kicks claiming vast areas of territory. Some great counter attacking saw Alex Barclay sprinting from the half way line ploughing through opposition players but was just bought down short of the try line. Matty Hickman was everywhere marshalling the troops and Duncan Howe combined with Matt Powell to provide a wall of defence against anyone they could get their hands on. Richard Baker was his usual constant threat sniping at the opposition and trying to prise open any opportunity. Brad Clements, Dan P, James Hughes and Zac Pressland ran their legs off all afternoon, competing for every ball. Will Conaghan provided a solid rearguard, always on hand for a last-minute try saving tackle. Worcester were their normal rampant self and ran in tries from all over the pitch, but didn’t have everything their own way. It took until the third quarter for the Marvels & Stags to get their reward, two tries and a conversion for Brad Clements together with a conversion from Zac Pressland put a respectable fourteen points on the visiting board. Heart, soul and effort was very much on display in an always improving Stafford & Telford Mixed Ability team.

The player’s player was Zac Pressland and the coach’s player was Will Conaghan. The final thanks must go to Worcester who were excellent hosts still playing a high level competitive but respectful game.

The Marvels & Stags squad was: Alex Barclay, Brad Clements, Dan P, Duncan Howe, James Hughes, Keith Richards, Matty Hickman, Matt Powell, Richard Baker, Will Conaghan, Zac Pressland. Scoring was Brad Clements x 2 tries & 1 conversion, Zac Pressland x 1 conversion.
