Telford 32 – 32 Stafford
Stafford took the short trip into Shropshire for a mixed ability rugby game against Telford Stags. The travelling county town team fielded a full nine players for the three ten-minute sessions of sevens rugby, enabling tactical substitutions for those who became pulmonary challenged.
Telford opened the scoring with a couple of tries before Stafford settled and responded. Adam Bicknell & Calvin Cooper-Ellis steadied the ship, solidly carrying the ball into Stags territory. Which allowed Rich Baker the room to undertake a heroic run of such length that he was hoping to get tackled but when Telford wouldn’t oblige it left him with no choice but to stumble over the line for a try. With Stafford in full flow Rew Carter marked his MAR debut with a diving try of a magnificence which deserved a spontaneous round of applause but was soon bought back to earth when a subsequent fingertip tap tackle took his legs from under him and the wind out of his lungs. A prowling Simon Lewis made his presence known as he demonstrated the art of defence chasing the opposition all over the pitch before rampaging off in the opposite direction to claim a few tries of his own. James Hughes kept the opposition busy all afternoon with his trademark darting runs tearing up the pitch to open up the space and take the tries on offer. Darren Roe provided the finesse for the whole operation, directing proceedings and moving the team around the park. The tackle of the afternoon went to Richard Hughes who wouldn’t let a Stags player get away from him before he put his body on the line and clambered over the opposition to fall on the ball preventing a certain try.
A great afternoon of mixed ability rugby with some fantastic tries from both teams and convivial food & drink provided by our generous hosts. If you would like to try mixed ability rugby then come down to the club at 7pm on Mondays or contact Steve Walker on 07572 124 166
