Another bumper afternoon of rugby sees Stafford score seven tries to lift themselves clear of relegation in the final league game of the season.

Moseley Oak 15 – 39 Stafford

Stafford travelled to Moseley for the final league game of the season with the prospect of relegation lurking in the background. With Tamworth rooted to the bottom of the table, the other potential relegation spot had become a straight competition between Stafford and Ludlow. The County Town side had hauled the Shropshire side back over successive weeks and going into the final league game of the season, both side were tied on the same points. Stafford needed to grab all five points on offer to try and gain an advantage over their rivals, the only flaw in the plan was that they were travelling to a ground where nobody could ever remember them winning at.

A gusting wind and bright sunshine set the backdrop for the opening of what was always going to be a nervous game. The visitors had bought a large and raucous pack of supporters to drive the team on from the side-line. A fired up Stafford showed their intent from the kick off but early forays were smothered by the well drilled home side. Continued probing attacks prised open the smallest of gaps and the visitors swarmed through, a tenacious break by Dave Austin exploited the opportunity, Dan Smith crossing the line with an opposition player on his back for the first try of the afternoon. Moseley Oak responded with a try of their own, but a yellow card sapped their momentum when they were temporarily reduced to fourteen players. The Stafford XV switched back into a gruelling series of attacks which rippled across all members of the squad. The visitors got their reward through an excellent lineout, which released the backs to punch their way through the defence, Matthew Chalmers scoring Staffords second try of the afternoon, Rich Martin adding the conversion. Once again Moseley Oak showed their pedigree and a well worked try drew the scores back together. It was Stafford who had the last word in the half, scything running released Dave Freeman, who used all of his pace to power past three defenders and find the line for his first try of the afternoon. Stafford went into half time leading by 10 – 17, and with three out of the four tries required for an additional bonus point.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Stafford back into their groove securing the ball, slick passing released a flying Dave Freeman for his second try of the afternoon and securing the try bonus point. Moseley Oak responded in typical fashion and proceeded to assault the Stafford defence driving them back to defend on their own line. The visitors provided a staunch response and a Charlie Venables interception saw him run the length of the pitch for another try, Rich Martin adding the conversion. Dave Freeman added the next as he continued to use his pace to dominate the wing and took his third try of the afternoon. Moseley Oak were still full of fight and worked hard to claw back a try of their own, giving them a small glimmer of hope. As legs started to tire the gaps started to appear, a Dean Ainger break coming close to scoring Staffords seventh, but just falling short of the line. Consistent Stafford work prised open the home side once again and fittingly Dean Ainger took the final pass to stretch across the line for the score. The final word in the game was left to Carl Williams who showed all his pace, powering out of the Stafford 22 with a steely focus on the Moseley Oak try line, it took a last gasp tackle to halt the charge and cruelly the Stafford stalwart was denied within fingertips of the line.
A fantastic final league game performance which has seen Stafford battle their way back from a difficult league position. Four wins out of the last six encounters has demonstrated a tremendous spirit and the strong heart which beats within this club has been much in evidence.
