Stafford shows their class, but can’t hold third in the league Kidderminster.

Kidderminster 42 – 24 Stafford

Stafford took to the road again heading into Wyre Forest for the return league fixture against Kidderminster. In the home encounter, Stafford had managed to batter their way to a draw, but since then Kidderminster found some good form which lifted them to third place in the league.

The first fifteen minutes of the game saw the visitors locked into the own 22 as the home side unleashed a barrage of attacks. After enduring the assault, Stafford grabbed the first attacking opportunity which presented itself and a Matty Walklate penalty fired them into the lead. Kidderminster struck back through a penalty to tie the scores and then followed up with a try to grab the lead. Stafford then hit their stride and some excellent rugby saw Kidderminster on the back foot. As the visitors pressed their way closer to the try line, Carl Williams tucked the ball under his arm and took the more direct route through a handful of defenders to score a brutish try, Dean Ainger slotting the conversion and tying the scores. Stafford finished the first half drawing 10 – 10 with both teams having had some bright periods of play.

Kidderminster came flying into the second half and barely five minutes had elapsed when a penalty, followed by a try re-established the lead. Stafford fought back and another bruising foray by Carl Williams softened up the defending line. Stafford continued to create chances and were unfortunate through two missed penalties. The visitors weren’t to be denied, hard work saw Matthew Chalmers crossing the line for the try, Dean Ainger converting and the lead reduced to a single point. Kidderminster showed their quality as they responded with a try and a penalty to prise the scores back apart. A feisty Stafford move battered the home side back down the pitch and tenacious probing attacks saw Stuart Lewis bursting through for the try, Dean Ainger taking the conversion and the visitors were back in the game. As legs tired Kidderminster ended the game with two more tries to give the home side the victory but with a scoreline that didn’t reflect how close and competitive the game had been.
