Sparkling Stafford bounce into form with a bonus point victory at the Cathedral and climb off the bottom of the table.

Stafford 29 – Tamworth 0

Stafford 1st XV welcomed Tamworth to the cathedral for the sixth league game of the season. The teams were both desperate to find some sort of form and kick start their respective seasons. Stafford fielded a more settled side which was bolstered by a couple of returning faces in key positions.

The Stafford pressure from the kick off was immense and Tamworth were forced to concede a penalty within the first few minutes, Rich Martin slotting the ball between the posts for an early lead. The home side continued to have the best of the play and the visitors were kept on the back foot. A bad cut forced Rhys Williams from the pitch and into the arms of a waiting paramedic, giving the returning Alex Yamoyamo the opportunity to take to the pitch. Tamworth took advantage of the brief respite to put together a dangerous attack, but Stafford absorbed everything which was thrown at them. In a ferocious swarming counter attack the home side battered the opposition aside, leaving several Tamworth players on the ground and allowing Alex Yamoyamo to cross the line for a try. Late into the half an injury to Dave Wareham cast another cloud over a positive afternoon. Stafford went into half time leading by 8 – 0 but having been the dominant team on the pitch.

The half time team talk had obviously urged more of the same and Stafford were finding plenty of space with a clubbing forward attack. Tamworth could only hold out for so long before Angus Lennon forced his way over in the corner for the second try of the afternoon, Rich Martin adding the conversion. Mike Davies was the next to score as he evaded several tackles and raced around to place the ball between the posts, Rich Martin finding the posts again with the conversion. Following the score a limping Tom Bell had to be helped off the pitch to add to the injury count. With five minutes of the game remaining the Cathedral found its voice as it urged the team on for the fourth try to secure the winning bonus point. Stafford threw the ball around the pitch stretching the opposition giving the predatory backs the opportunity to pounce and with a series of darting attacks Tamworth were prised wide open for Alex Yamoyamo to take his second try of the afternoon with Rich Martin adding the conversion to close a great afternoon of rugby.
