Stourbridge 30 – Stafford 12
Stafford 1st XV travelled down the A449 for the fourth league game of the season against Stourbridge. The team still was under strength and struggling to find experienced cover for key positions.
A minor handling error gifted Stourbridge an almost instant try and set the scene for a long afternoon of rugby. Stafford reformed producing a scything attack between Rhys Williams and Dave Wareham which carved the home side apart allowing Rich Martin to dive between the posts and then convert his own try to snatch the lead. Unfortunate defensive errors allowed Stourbridge back in the match with two tries, missed conversions keeping the score lines in touching distance. Stafford went into half time trailing 15 – 7, but having looked dangerous at points.
Stourbridge opened the second half with a blistering attack to take their fourth try of the afternoon and the bonus point. Stafford then produced their best rugby of the afternoon punching through a bemused opposition defence for a well-earned Dan Smith try bringing scores closer together. Stafford threatened again, but a Stourbridge penalty re-established a comfortable lead. The visitors afternoon got worse when injuries to Tom Bell and Dave Wareham lead to more headaches for the coaching staff. A final Stourbridge try finished off a long afternoon of rugby for a Stafford team who have been deserted by lady luck.
