Stafford clash with the Spartans and go out of the cup with a fighting performance.

Spartans 35 – 24 Stafford

Stafford made the short trip to Sutton Coldfield for a quarter final cup clash against Spartans. The county team travelled with further changes to the team that had played against Kidderminster the previous week. Spartans came into the game sitting third in their league and with an impressive seven wins out of nine for the season.

Stafford kicked off playing down a slight slope and early missed tackles gave the hosts the advantage, Spartans taking an early converted try to open the game. Spartans continued to play strong running rugby and soon added to their total with an unconverted try which stretched the lead. Stafford started to get some possession and Will Hamplett, after making a searing break was tackled short of the line, eventually being penalised for holding on. Spartans resumed the attack and with plenty of possession, assisted by missed tackles, scored a further unconverted try to establish a sizeable lead. Spartans forwards had the edge on Stafford all afternoon and continued to make dents in the defence and only a try saving tackle by Will Hamplett stopped the home side from extending their lead further. Stafford were now starting to get some ball and were rewarded with a Rich Martin penalty kick to put their first points of the afternoon on the board. However almost straight from the kick off Stafford conceded a penalty and Spartans kicked the goal from distance to re-establish a seventeen point lead. With almost the last play of the half Stafford went on the attack and scored a well-deserved try through Ollie Leigh under the posts, Rich Martin adding the conversion. Stafford went into half time trailing by 20-10, but having closed the gap on an early Spartans lead.

The second half started with Stafford now playing up the slope and making a change in the pack with Neil Green coming off to be replaced by Ross Newell. The half started in a very similar fashion to opening of the game with the Spartans forwards dominating in most aspects of play. They continued to attack and Stafford were reduced to 14 men through a sin binning for a technical offence. Spartans decided to take the scrum from the penalty and drove over the line for an unconverted try to stretch out the lead once more. Stafford made further changes in the forwards with Ben Pryce coming in for his second game of the season. Stafford now with plenty of ball started playing some of their best rugby of the afternoon and were eventually rewarded with a break away try and conversion by Rich Martin to narrow the deficit. Spartans responded at the kick off by turning Stafford over through their strong forwards making big carries into the opposition half and got their reward through another unconverted try to add to their sizeable lead. Stafford kicked off and had the best period of play all afternoon and with plenty of possession scored with almost the last play of the game again with Richard Martin converting his second try to make the final score 35-24 to Spartans.
