Trick or treat for Halloween with touch rugby at the Morgan Ground.

Stafford took the short journey across to the Huntington for a friendly game of touch rugby against near neighbours Cannock Lions. The Bull Terriers travelled in good numbers with a mixture of youth sprinkled with a generous helping of experience.

The visitors had enough numbers for two full teams whilst the home side started off with fewer players, but as the game progressed their numbers on the side lines swelled to a decent sized squad. The weather wasn’t kind to the teams with autumnal rain, swirling winds and a slippery surface making play difficult. But a bout of sunshine thawed everyone out for a good afternoon of rugby.

Darren Roe officiated with a watchful eye which kept the teams on the straight and narrow. The sides played an exhausting paced game of touch rugby which saw tries crashing in from all areas of the pitch. Rolling substitutes assisted in keeping players fresh and allowing the runners to fly off on some blistering attacks. There was plenty of laughter and the atmosphere was excellent in between players sucking in deep breaths of oxygen.

Touch rugby is a none contact version of the rugby game which is excellent for people of all abilities. Stafford train on a Wednesday night and new players are always welcome. You can run out with the Staffies Bull Terriers or there is also a more sedate and informal social session for those just wanting to run around for fun. The club also has a walking version of the game on a Wednesday afternoon.
